In a thrilling and research experience on information sharing in various disciplines, over 25 post graduate students in LARMAT participated in poster and oral presentation of their ongoing and past research. Students’ research was drawn from various thematic areas. This includes;

  • Environment, Natural Resource Management and sustainability
  • Gender youth policy and governance in Agriculture
  • Crop systems
  • Agribusiness technology transfer and extensions

Theme for the ARGRO 2019 conference: “Catalyzing sustainable food and nutrition security through research, technology and innovation”

The Nairobi International Trade Fair (NITF) was held from 30th September to October 6th 2019 at the Jamuhuri Grounds, Nairobi. The theme for the 2019 was “Promoting Innovation and Technology in Agriculture and Trade”. The college of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences  (CAVS) participated in the event, being major partners and contributors to the efforts of increasing agricultural productivity in the country in line with vision 2030 and the big 4 agenda. The University of Nairobi, CAVS is a key player in areas of Agricultural innovations, food safety and quality, agricultural processing and value addition, environmental conservation and capacity development in agriculture and agro-based industry. MEET THE SUPREME CHAMPION JERSEY AT THE NAIROBI INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR 2019: FROM THE COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE AND VETERINARY SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF NAIROBI

Nairobi International show- 2019

The University of Nairobi Vet farm participated in livestock competition under various categories of livestock, namely; Friesian cow, Guernsey breed, Jersey and crosses. The performance was overwhelming with Jersey cows from the farm getting Supreme champion, Champion and reserved champion positions. The Supreme Champion, champion and the reserved champion Jersey breed from UoN was among the cattle walked in the livestock parade witnessed by the president of Kenya, Hon Uhuru Kenyatta. The University has embraced good animal husbandry practices for better productivity, providing hand on training to farmers and students in veterinary and animal production. The Jersey breed provides an opportu8nity to small scale dairy farmers in having low feed demand animal with high productivity. The University farms contributes to breeding for better livestock breeds, conservation of important breeds for better future  food and nutritional security amidst the increasing demand of animal products.

OFFICIAL HAND OVER OF THE TROPHIES AND PRIZES WON DURING THE NAIROBI INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR (NITF) 2019 TO THE COLLEGE PRINCIPAL CAVS

The official hand over of the trophies/cups won during the NITF 2019 was done on Friday 11th Oct 2019 at the College. The meeting trophies were handed over to the Principal, Professor Rose Nyikal by the Planning committee and participants during the NITF 2019. The Show committee chair, Dr. Oscar Koech thanked all the participants for their selfless sacrifice in preparation and participation to the event. The college Principal was also happy to have had the team drive the whole process with humility and much enthusiasm that made it a success. The Principal was happy to hear the college had won 9 cups from the event together with other wins of prizes from other categories the college participated in. The following trophies were received by the College Principal; ASK perpetual challenge Cup for the 2019 NITF, International Potato centre perpetual challenge Cup 2019 NITF, Albatros Fertilizers Perpetual challenge Cup 2019 NITF, Haig Perpetual challenge Cup 2019 NITF, Ideal Farm Perpetual challenge Cup NITF 2019, Walla Perpetual challenge Cup NITF 2019- Pigs Section, Ash Stead Perpetual challenge Trophy NITF 2019, Supreme champion Cock cup and the Kenchic competition Cup.

SCHOLARSHIPS- YOUNG AFRICAN SCIENTISTS

Invitation for Applications from Young African Scientists to Participate in The Second Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) Global Research and Expertise....

To assist and advise the Global PPR Secretariat, a Global PPR Advisory Committee was established in June 2017. In addition, the PPR Global Research and Expertise Network (PPR-GREN) was established as a forum for scientific and technical consultations to encourage and support PPR research activities that may contribute to better targeting and enhance the efficiency of interventions for PPR eradication. The first meeting of PPR-GREN was held from 17 to 19 April 2018 in Vienna, Austria. Its goal is to promote and initiate an integrated, comprehensive research and expertise network that capitalizes upon synergies to eliminate the threat posed by small ruminant diseases with a special focus on PPR in order to improve the livelihoods, food security and health of people globally and protect biodiversity. Click  the link  to view  more information.

It was clear that from respective institutions and activities were involved in they gained concrete knowledge and skills which are in line to their carrier prospects.
